Following a temporary exhibition of Balinese art, I made an interior design for a loft-apartment, owned by the owner of a creative therapy practice (husband) and an anthropologist (wife) specialized in Bali

In an old factory, Family de Wit wants to build a loft. In this home various spaces needs to be realised for various activities. Mister de Wit has his own practice for creative therapy. For this therapy a separate place has to be designed. With the design concept is reverted to the Balinese culture and especially the Balinese religion.

Location

Concept - Bali is an Indonesian Island with about 3,2 million inhabitants. The biggest part of the population adheres to the Hindu religion. Religion is very important for this island. You can see this through the many sacrifices that are brought to the big amount of temples. Not just the major-temples but also  'house-temples' and even on the street. At the temple services you can see sacrifices, decorated with many flowers and fruits. The services are supported by the traditional Gamelan-music. This music is even used at  theatre- and dance performances.

According the Balinese Hindus the whole cosmos exists by the grace of contradictions. Every power has a counterpart like sun and moon, light and darkness and good and evil. There is an 'underworld', connected to the sea where the demons live. There is an 'upper world', connected to the mountains and in special the volcano Gunung Agung, seen as the holy mountain, where the gods live. Between the sea and the mountains are human beings representing the 'middle-world'. The gods of the 'upperworld' are in an eternal battle with the demons of the 'underworld' but there will never be a winner. Through the counterparts there is balance and through this also harmony. This harmony is maintained by the sacrifices of people.

The Balinese religion with her Kosmos exists out of counterparts like high and low, light and darkness, gods and demons..

Sketching process

On the ground floor I created the living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and toilet. On the first floor I placed the creative therapy practice where the householder can do his job. By this classification are work and privacy completely separated.
